Mount Palerang

Out & About

Duration: Up to 3 hours
Category: Short
Height: 1,264 metres
Length: 2.6 km

HOW TO GET THERE:
Drive west from Braidwood for 9 km on the Bombay Road. Shortly after crossing the Shoalhaven River, take the Little Bombay Road on the right. After 4 km, veer left and continue for a further 3.5 km to the junction of Butmaroo and Mulloon Fire Trails. Veer left on to the Mulloon Fire Trail and, ignoring the Bombay Fire Trail on the left, continue on the Mulloon Fire Trail for a further 5.5 km until the connecting saddle is reached at the junction of the Palerang and Gourock Fire Trails.

WALK DIRECTIONS:
By walking south between the Palerang and Mulloon Fire Trails, Mt Palerang trig is reached by a climb of 300 m in altitude in approximately 1.3 km. There are no tracks, but if the ridge top is maintained, no difficulty should be encountered. After the first couple of hundred metres, much of the climb is over rocky outcrops, so care should be taken if there has been recent rain.

TIME ESTIMATE:
3 hours total - ½ hour drive each way and a 2-hour walk

DEGREE OF DIFFICULTY:
Easy / medium grade, depending on fitness

NOTES:
Take food and water, and dress appropriately for changing weather conditions. A compass is advisable as the descent route may be difficult to maintain if cloud develops.

BROCHURES / MAPS:
Topographic Map BOMBAY 8827 - 111 - S

SPECIAL FEATURES:
Mt Palerang on the Great Diving Range offers magnificent views of the Budawang Range and Clyde Mountain to the east, Lake George to the north-west, and on a clear day, the waterspout on Lake Burley Griffin in Canberra can be seen clearly.

WARNING:
This walk has no defined tracks or markers and it is therefore recommended that a detailed topographic map be carried by anyone attempting this walk.

Mulloon Fire Trail is a rough, bush track, and whilst trafficable to two-wheel-drive vehicles, some drivers may consider it unsuitable for such vehicles. It is recommended that four-wheel-drive vehicles be used.

The Shoalhaven River may become impassable after heavy rain.
